California Couple Quit Their Teaching Jobs To Start Their Own ‘Anti-Woke’ School

A couple from California recently shared that they are leaving their teaching careers to open a school that promotes “traditional American values” and steers clear of “woke” ideologies.

For quite some time now, there has been a heated discussion about what should be taught in schools.

Some people prefer sticking to more traditional content, as opposed to the newer, progressive subjects being introduced.

This very couple is taking a big step to challenge what they see as an overly politicized direction in public education by starting a school of their own.

Kali Fontanilla and her husband, Joshua, are the founders of this new online school.

They have shifted their focus to “traditional American values” rather than the typical school curriculum, which they believe tends to push liberal politics onto students.

Both of them used to teach in Salinas, California.

After spending two decades in the field of education, they left their jobs to establish the Exodus Institute.

Joshua expressed his concerns to the Daily Mail, stating:

“I’d say that in general, being a conservative or just somebody who believes in traditional American values is something that makes you kind of endangered or marked in the public school system.

“It’s gotten to the point in public schools where you can’t just mind your own business and keep your politics to yourself because they push it on everyone that you have to participate in liberal politics.”

Kali noticed significant changes during her years teaching at regular public schools.

She explained: “There are a lot of things teachers didn’t have to face at that time.

“There wasn’t pressure to put pronouns in your bio, or in your email [signature]… there wasn’t pressure to ask your students about their pronouns. There weren’t co-workers claiming their white privilege.”

Kali, who is 41 years old and biracial, mentioned an uptick in politically charged initiatives in schools after George Floyd’s death in 2020.

She was once offered a “gift for black teachers,” which included a face mask bearing the message “black educators matter.”

She commented: “I don’t want to be recognized for my skin color, I want to be recognized for the work I have done as a teacher in the classroom.

“What if a white teacher wore a ‘white educators matter’ mask? It’s also making a political statement. Me wearing a black educators matter mask is a political statement.”

In May 2022, she and her husband launched the Exodus Institute, branding it as “anti-woke.”

The institute currently educates almost 200 students, with tuition fees ranging from $2,000 to $8,000 annually per student.

Joshua outlined the school’s philosophy, saying: “It’s a counter, it’s anti-woke and it’s refuting the lies that are taught by the left.

“But really it’s just going back to traditional American values.”

Additionally, the couple operates the Young Patriots Academy, which serves as an educational supplement for homeschooled children at a cost of $29 per month.
